FSW Education Points: How Your ECA Report Sets Them (Not Your Degree)

Education is worth up to 25 points on the FSW grid, and for anyone educated outside Canada, one document decides them all: the Educational Credential Assessment. Your diploma's name is irrelevant — the points come from the Canadian equivalency your ECA report states.

Who needs an ECA

Studied in Canada? Your certificate, diploma or degree from a Canadian secondary or post-secondary institution stands on its own — no assessment needed. Studied anywhere else? You need both a completed credential and an ECA for immigration purposes from an IRCC-designated organization before your education exists on the grid at all — it's one of the program's minimum requirements, not just a points matter.

Reading the report: equivalency is everything

The report translates your credential into Canadian terms, and that translation is what you score:

The gap cases are where plans break: a foreign "four-year degree" assessed as a three-year Canadian bachelor's scores 21, and a master's assessed as a postgraduate diploma misses 23 entirely. Never pre-count points your report hasn't confirmed.

The 22-point row is free money

Two or more post-secondary credentials — one of them three years or longer — outscore a single bachelor's. Any assessed one-year diploma or certificate alongside your degree, in any field, in any order, adds the extra point. If you hold one, assess it.

Practicalities that bite

• Five-year validity. The report must be under five years old on the day you apply; an expired ECA means a fresh application and fee.
• Designated organizations only. WES, IQAS, ICES, CES, ICAS — plus the profession-specific bodies for physicians and pharmacists.
• Lead time. Weeks to months, driven mostly by how fast your university sends transcripts. Start it first; nothing else in your file waits on more.

Choosing between organizations

Any designated body's report is equally valid to IRCC, so choose on turnaround time for your country's documents and on whether your profession requires a specific assessor — physicians must use the Medical Council of Canada and pharmacists the PEBC. When two organizations are known to assess the same credential differently, that's worth researching before you pay: the equivalency, not the logo, is what the grid reads.
