The Express Entry Process for FSW: Profile to PR, Step by Step

Between "I scored 67" and "I'm a permanent resident" sits a process with fixed deadlines, fees and waits. Here's the whole FSW pipeline in order, with the 2026 timings attached to each stage.

Stage 1 — Before the pool (you control the clock)

Language test, ECA, reference letters, and the six-month funds history. The ECA is the long pole — typically 4–8 weeks after your university sends transcripts — so it starts first. Most candidates spend longer here than in every later stage combined.

Stage 2 — Profile and pool (up to 12 months)

With documents in hand, creating the profile takes a day. It stays valid for 12 months; if no invitation comes, you re-create it. IRCC holds rounds roughly every two weeks, and your wait depends entirely on your CRS against the cut-offs of draws you can enter — days if you're above the line, indefinite if you're not and standing still.

Stage 3 — ITA: 60 days, no extensions

An Invitation to Apply starts a hard 60-day clock to submit your electronic application (e-APR) with everything attached: police certificates from countries you've lived in, an upfront medical exam, employment letters, proof of funds. Prepared applicants file in two to three weeks; police certificates from some countries can eat the full window, which is why collecting them before the ITA is standard advice.

Stage 4 — Fees

At submission: $1,525 for the principal applicant (including the Right of Permanent Residence Fee), $1,525 for a spouse, $260 per dependent child, plus biometrics at $85 per person or $170 per family. Biometrics get booked at a Visa Application Centre within 30 days of the instruction letter.

Stage 5 — Processing (the six-month standard)

IRCC's service standard is six months for 80% of complete applications, counted from the Acknowledgement of Receipt — and published times for FSW have hovered around seven months through 2026, reflecting foreign document verification. The visible milestones: AOR within days, medical and biometrics requests in the first couple of months, then a quiet background-check stretch, then the Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR).

Stage 6 — Landing

With COPR (and a visa where required), you travel to Canada, complete landing, and become a permanent resident; the physical PR card follows by mail, typically within one to three months. End to end — first document to landing — a well-run FSW file commonly spans 12 to 18 months, most of it in your preparation stage.
