French for Express Entry: NCLC 7, the Scores You Need, and Why It's the Best Lever in 2026

No single credential moves an overseas FSW candidate's odds like French. It unlocks the largest, lowest-scoring draws of 2026, adds up to 50 bonus CRS points, and pays on the 67-point grid too. The threshold for all of it is one level: NCLC 7 in all four abilities.

What NCLC 7 buys you

• French-category draws. The biggest rounds of 2026 — 5,000 invitations at a time — with CRS cut-offs around 382–420, roughly 100–140 points below Canadian Experience Class rounds. NCLC 7 in all four abilities is the entry ticket.
• The CRS bilingual bonus. NCLC 7+ across all four French abilities earns 50 extra points if your English is CLB 5 or better, or 25 points otherwise — on top of the core language points French earns as a second official language.
• Grid points. On the FSW grid, French at NCLC 5+ as your second language adds the flat 4 points; as your first official language it can carry the full 24.

The two accepted tests, and the scores that equal NCLC 7

IRCC accepts exactly two French tests: TEF Canada and TCF Canada. Their scales differ completely, so a target on one says nothing about the other:

TEF certificates issued since late 2023 show both a /699 score and an "équivalence ancien score" column — Express Entry uses the old-score equivalence, so enter those values in your profile, not the /699 figures.

How far is NCLC 7, really?

NCLC 7 sits at the lower edge of CEFR B2 — upper-intermediate. For a motivated learner starting near zero, that's typically 12–18 months of serious study; from a B1 base, often 4–8 months. Weigh that against the alternative: gaining 130 CRS points any other way is, for most overseas candidates, simply impossible. One weak ability blocks everything — all four must clear NCLC 7 — so train toward your weakest skill, which for most candidates is writing.

Where French fits your strategy

If your grid score already clears 67, French is the highest-return investment left: it converts a stranded 420-CRS profile into one that fits the year's largest draws, as the numbers in FSW draws in 2026 show. If you're below 67, French can even fix eligibility itself — NCLC 5 in all four abilities adds the 4 second-language points that turn a 64 into a 68.
